Description

Students are required to analyse the contexts, theories, and policies in the first six weeks of the unit, and to situate and critically evaluate these with reference to a contemporary early childhood situation. The research essay engages students’ analytical and writing skills.

Requirements

Students should analyse the topics in the first six weeks of the unit, and choose a single focus for their research essay. The essay focus can touch on a range of topics, or selection of topics. Either way, the essay should touch on foundations of early childhood education and care, philosophical and research-based perspectives, the EYLF, theories about socialisation, identity and belonging, the role of policy and regulation, and quality assurance. The essay should be located in a particular situation which may relate to a practical, educational or managerial experience.

This essay is a key chance to:

  • Articulate and critique key theories within the context of early childhood education;
  • Appraise the major policy and regulatory documents of early childhood education in Australia;
  • Analyse and debate contemporary Australian and international teaching and learning

practices as they pertain to early childhood education; and

  • Appreciate the perspectives of working as an early childhood professional within a rapidly changing landscape.

The research essay should be 2,000 words in length.
