Your Task

This assessment is to be completed individually. Throughout weeks 4-9, you have engaged in various practical activities using Cisco Packet Tracer to simulate network scenarios. For this assessment, you are required to build a network simulation demonstrating a robust understanding of network architecture and communication protocols. You will prepare a comprehensive written report that evaluates your network design, details the communication protocols used, analyses the network's performance, and provides solutions to any identified issues. Your report should demonstrate your ability to effectively apply theoretical knowledge to design and troubleshoot a simulated network environment.

Assessment Description

This assessment challenges you to create a comprehensive network simulation using Cisco Packet Tracer, reflecting the knowledge acquired from weeks 4-9. Your task is to develop a realistic network environment that includes various devices and communication protocols, demonstrating your skills in network design, configuration, management, and troubleshooting. This simulation will explore concepts such as routing, switching, and wireless implementations, showcasing your capability to manage and troubleshoot complex network infrastructures.

Network Design:

  1. Design a Network Topology:

  • Topoloy: Create a topology in Cisco Packet Tracer that includes at least two routers, two switches, and multiple hosts.

  • Naming Convention: Name the first router with your first name (e.g., Router_John) and the second router with your last name (e.g., Router_Doe).

  • Network Scenario Generators CustomGPT: Utilise the Network Scenario Generator to assist in generating and refining your network scenario.

2. Incorporate Different Networks:

  • Design two separate networks: Network A connected to Router_John, and Network B connected to Router_Doe.

  • Ensure that PC-A is connected to Network A and PC-B is connected to Network B, facilitating inter-network communication.

3. Wireless Network Integration (from Week 7):

  • Introduce wireless access points to both networks to extend connectivity and support mobile devices.

  • Implement basic WLAN configurations that include security protocols such as WPA2, SSID setups, and appropriate channel selections to optimise performance and minimise interference.

Configuration and Simulation:

  1. Device Configuration:

  • Configure devices using the following IP addressing schemes or Network Scenario Generators Custom GPTNetwork Scenario Generator to assist in generating alternative valid IP configurations:

  • Note: The above IP addresses are just suggestions. You are encouraged to modify these as needed or use any other valid IPs suggested by the Network Scenario Generator.

2. Wireless Configuration Setup:

  • Deploy wireless access points in each network to provide WLAN coverage.

  • Configure each access point with a unique SSID to distinguish between Network A and Network B, ensuring security and seamless connectivity for wireless devices.

Testing and Troubleshooting:

  1. Network Testing:

  • Conduct connectivity tests such as pinging between wired and wireless devices across networks to confirm proper configuration.

  • Use show ip route and other relevant commands to display routing tables from each router, ensuring correct routing protocols are in place.

2.Troubleshooting:

  • Verify IP addresses, subnet masks, and default gateway configurations for both wired and wireless setups.

  • Check static routes on both routers to ensure proper paths are set for both inter and intra-network communication.

  • Troubleshoot any issues with wireless connectivity, focusing on SSID visibility, authentication issues, and signal strength.

This assessment aims to achieve the following subject learning outcomes:

LO1Evaluate the maintechnologies, models and protocols usedin data communications and networking.
LO3Identify problems thatemerge among the networks thatconstitute today's internet architecture.
LO4Recommend and apply solutions for common internet architecture problems.

Assessment Instructions

  • Document every step of your design, configuration, and troubleshooting process. Include screenshots and descriptions of each stage.
  • Compile your findings and analyses into a final report that includes an overview of the network architecture, a detailed description of the network's operation, and a section on problem- solving strategies.
  • Submit your Cisco Packet Tracer file (.pkt) along with the report in a single Word or PDF File.
  • You should include relevant diagrams or figures to support your analysis and recommendations.
  • Your report should be formatted appropriately with headings and subheadings.
  • Your report should include at least ten (10) academic references from credible sources, such as peer-reviewed journal articles, industry reports, or scholarly books.
  • Please refer to the assessment marking guide to help you complete all the assessment criteria.
