skills. It is designed in three interconnected parts to encourage iterative learning and improvement. In Part I, students provide foundational information about a selected project, including its background, delivery method, main contractor, bidding process, and current progress. Though ungraded, this initial report receives vital feedback to enhance subsequent sections. Part II builds on Part I by requiring students to integrate feedback and delve deeper into project aspects such as contract types, challenges, and financial or scheduling issues. This segment fosters analytical thinking and problem-solving. Finally, Part III synthesizes the improvements from Parts I and II and adds interpretation, conclusions, and recommendations grounded in data analysis and literature. The final assessment also includes a presentation to develop students’ communication skills. This structured approach aims to refine students’ research, writing, and presentation abilities, ensuring they can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world project management scenarios effectively.
| Assessment Instructions | Assessment Task: Students are required to choose one of the above projects and address the following questions as part of their assessment. The task is divided in to three parts: Part I: Report Submission(Week 5) This initial report will not be graded, but it is mandatory. Feedback will be provided, which is essential for completing Parts II and III. Incorporating this feedback is crucial for success in the final part of the assessment.
Questions for Part I: Background and Objectives: Provide a brief description of the project's background and its objectives. Project Delivery Method: Identify the project delivery method chosen for this project and explain the reasons behind this choice. Main Construction Contractor: Identify the main construction contractor and provide a brief background of the organization. Bidding Process: Describe the bidding process and how the construction contractor was selected. Current Updates: Provide the latest updates on the project's progress.
Part II: Improvement Plan and Additional Analysis (Report submission in week 8) In this section, students are required to outline their plan for improving the initial part of the assessment task based on the feedback from their lecturer/tutor. Additionally, students must address the following questions. Although this segment is not graded, its completion is mandatory as it forms the foundation for the final assessment. |
Questions for Part II: Summary of Improvements: Write a summary of how the first part of the assessment task can be improved based on the lecturer/tutor’s feedback. Contract Types: Identify and explain if different contract types (e.g., fixed-price, cost-type, or labor and material) are used for various aspects of the project such as design, construction, construction management, or operation and maintenance. Project Issues: Discuss any issues (environmental, funding, or political) associated with the project that are hindering its progress. Cost Overrun and Schedule Delays: Examine any cost over runs or schedule delays for the project, providing specific figures such as the amount of cost overrun in millions and the extent of schedule delays in months or years.
Part III: Final Part of the Assessment Task (Report submission in week12) In this part, students must reflect on how Parts I and II can be further improved based on feedback and complete the following tasks: Summary of Part II Improvements: summarize how Part II can be handed based on feedback from the lecturer/tutor. Discussion and Conclusions: Provide an interpretation of the findings, draw conclusions, and offer recommendations. Ensure that these conclusions and recommendations are closely linked to the data collected and analyzed for the case project and are grounded in the relevant literature.
Final Report Compilation: The final report should include the revised versions of Part I and Part II, in addition to Part III. Presentation: Verbally present the analysis of the case project in week 12. Refer to Assessment 4 for presentation details.
