Rationale
The aim of this assessment is to provide students with a meaningful and practical opportunity to analyse and apply theoretical knowledge and concepts to real-world issues implicating social work within human services organizations. By critically reviewing a case study students can deepen their understanding of the challenges faced by individuals within bureaucratic systems.
You are required to critically analyse the portrayal of social and human service organisations and management in the movie I, Daniel Blake. In your analysis, discuss how relevant theories and concepts apply to the depiction of organisational dynamics in the movie. Additionally, explain the significant organisational issues highlighted in the movie, including the relationships with management and the importance of effective communication within and across social work organisations. Your response should demonstrate a deep understanding of organisational theories and their relevance to social work practice, as depicted in the movie.
Introduction – Briefly introduce the movie I, Daniel Blake, state its purpose and highlight the organisational theories and issues depicted in the movie.
Organisational theories analysis - Identify at least two organizational theories pertinent to the movie, offer a concise explanation of each chosen theory, and use them to analyse particular scenes or interactions within the movie, citing examples from the movie using the format: author, date, timestamp (e.g., Coles, 2025, 22:20mins); cite and reference other resources as normal.
Organisational issues in social work practice - Identify at least two significant organizational issues and examine the dynamics of the relationships between social or human service workers and management as depicted in the movie, citing specific examples. Critically analyse the effectiveness and/or otherwise of communication within and among the organizations shown in the movie, indicating their effects on service provision and client outcomes.
Conclusion - Summarise and reflect on the implications of your analysis for social work practice in organizations. No new information! (Use formal language throughout).
