Step 1: Work

Choose ONE industryjob from the following list: 

  • Vehicle drivers (such as a taxi, truck, or food delivery vehicle) 
  • Emergency service workers (such as ambulance worker, firefighter, or police officer) 
  • Personal care and healthcare (such as a nurse, dentist, or aged care worker)   
  • Construction workers (such as electrician, plumber, carpenter, crane operator, bricklayer, or tiler)
  • Another occupation of your choice – like a salesperson, hospitality worker, hairdresser, cleaner or factory worker. 

Provide a short overview of the industry and job you have chosen. Include some examples of the typical tasks required in the role.

Step 2: Worker

Both older and migrant workers present unique challenges to maintaining good health within the workforce. Some industries are heavily dependent on migrant workers, while other industries are becoming increasingly reliant on an ageing workforce. Discuss the potential impacts of the hazards of your chosen jobon either older OR migrant workers.

Note: If you choose to discuss migrant workers, remember to consider cultural and religious issues – as well as language barriers and communication issues.

Step 3: Workplace

Employers have a legal obligation to protect their workers from harm. One of the responsibilities of managers is to identify potential hazards for their employees and take steps to mitigate them. Workplace risk factors can be addressed in various ways. Some risk factors that affect workers can be modified through training or other professional development (e.g. language), while others cannot (e.g. age). 

Describe what steps a manager or workplace could take to prevent or mitigate the risk posed by your chosen hazard. Your response must be feasible and relevant to your chosen job and industry. You must also refer to where your suggestion/s fit within the Hierarchy of Hazard Controls.
