Assessment 2 – Context and questions

Part A: Written Report (appx. 20% of the total grade)

Description

In 2019, the Australian Photovoltaics Institute (APVI) released a report detailing the growth in the solar PV industry in Australia over the past decade. Installed solar capacity increased 100-fold in the 10 years to 2019, and Australia now has the highest proportion of households with solar PV energy systems installed in the world.

The article by the New York Times outlines why Australian households have installed a record amount of rooftop solar in the past decade. They focus specifically on 3 reasons:

  1. The incentives offered by state governments to households to purchase solar panels.
  2. A sharp drop in the production cost of solar panels caused by technological development, as discussed earlier this semester.
  3. The increase in electricity prices from traditional power sources (i.e. close substitutes).

Question 1

a. Construct a model of supply and demand for the Australian rooftop PV market. Demonstrate how each of the factors outlined by the New York Times would affect the equilibrium price and quantity for solar PV panels, using separate graphs for each reason.

b. The figure below outlines the evolution of the average retail price ($/watt) of solar panels faced by consumers in Australia. Given the overall change in equilibrium price and quantity, what change identified in your answer to (a) do you think has dominated Australia’s rooftop PV market, the change in supply or demand?

Question 2

  1. As of 2023, the price of a packet of cigarettes is $40. If the government imposes a 15% tax on cigarettes on the producers. Answer the following questions.

  1. Draw a diagram to illustrate the effect of tax on cigarettes.
  2. What determines the incidence of the tax?
  3. Under what conditions will the consumer pay a greater proportion of the tax?
  4. According to the supply and demand model is society worse off or better offbecause of the imposition of the per unit tax? Is tax efficient? What is the rationale for the government to impose taxes on cigarettes?
  5. Provide two examples where tax can be efficient.

  6. Suppose you are a financial advisor of Rainbow Childcare Centre. The Centre is seeking some financial advice regarding how they might increase the revenue generated bythe centreby altering the price they charge to the customers. What would you advise? Should they raise or lower the price? Explain your answer with the aid of a diagram.

Question 3

Phoebe is a bread company in Australia that produces white slices. Assume Phoebe is a firm in a perfectly competitive industry.

  1. Analyse the behaviour of a perfectly competitive firm. Substantiate your answer when the firm is making economic profit in the short run.
  2. How does the transition to the long run happen when competitors join the industry?
  3. Suppose that firms producing bread decide to get together and form a Cartel. Analyse the consequence of forming a cartel. (Hints: The answer must contain the allocation of resources and goods that affect social welfare).

Note: You must provide the correct citation and reference for authentic sources used in evaluating the SBR reporting in Australia.

Additional instruction: The research must be presented with a Reference List at the end of the paper. You should also check the accuracy of the responses before using them and reference the sources used for this verification.

Part B (presentation): (Appx. 10% of the total grade)

The group presentation is in the form of a PowerPoint presentation of 15-20 PowerPoint slides. This is a mix of visual representations of contents, data, and images to build an argument on economic and policy changes andtheir application to the decision-making of the business.

The group will consist of Maximum 4 members. To form the groups students can self-select the group by using Moodle facility. The 15-20-minute presentations will be presented by students using the PowerPoint slides.
