Assessment 2 – Context and questions
Part A: Written Report (appx. 20% of the total grade)
Description
In 2019, the Australian Photovoltaics Institute (APVI) released a report detailing the growth in the solar PV industry in Australia over the past decade. Installed solar capacity increased 100-fold in the 10 years to 2019, and Australia now has the highest proportion of households with solar PV energy systems installed in the world.
The article by the New York Times outlines why Australian households have installed a record amount of rooftop solar in the past decade. They focus specifically on 3 reasons:
Question 1
a. Construct a model of supply and demand for the Australian rooftop PV market. Demonstrate how each of the factors outlined by the New York Times would affect the equilibrium price and quantity for solar PV panels, using separate graphs for each reason.
b. The figure below outlines the evolution of the average retail price ($/watt) of solar panels faced by consumers in Australia. Given the overall change in equilibrium price and quantity, what change identified in your answer to (a) do you think has dominated Australia’s rooftop PV market, the change in supply or demand?
Question 2
Provide two examples where tax can be efficient.
Question 3
Phoebe is a bread company in Australia that produces white slices. Assume Phoebe is a firm in a perfectly competitive industry.
Note: You must provide the correct citation and reference for authentic sources used in evaluating the SBR reporting in Australia.
Additional instruction: The research must be presented with a Reference List at the end of the paper. You should also check the accuracy of the responses before using them and reference the sources used for this verification.
Part B (presentation): (Appx. 10% of the total grade)
