COIT20261 Network Routing and Switching Term 2 2024

Assessment Item 1—Written Assessment

Due date:11:45pm AEST, Friday, Week 6ASSESSMENT
Weighting:20%1

Answer all questions using the supplied Template.  The template includes information about the criteria used in marking your work.

Question 1 – Information about a block                                                                 (3 marks)

From a block of addresses granted by an ISP, a Network Administrator “borrowed” 2 bits to create a subnet which included the following address:  144.76.35.101/26.

Show your calculations for parts a, b, and c.  ALL the marks in this question are based on your calculations.  To receive a mark, your answer must be correct AND you have shown valid calculations to arrive at the answer.  An answer with no calculation will be marked zero.

  1. How many addresses are available in the original block granted by the ISP? (1 mark)
  2. How many addresses are available in the subnet? (1 mark)
  3. What is the first address of the subnet? (1 mark)

Question 2– Creating subnets from a classless block                                             (7 marks)

An ISP has allocated your company a block of addresses that contains the address 137.45.200.50/20.

Your boss is not a networking tech, so assigns you the task of creating five subnets that the department needs.  You are told that the department needs:

  1. One subnet with at least 1,500 addresses
    1. One subnet with at least 750 addresses
    2. Three subnets with at least 250 addresses each
    3. One subnet with at least 100 addresses
    4. The remaining set of unallocated addresses

Your task:  Create the Seven subnets that meet the requirements given, where the last set is the remaining set of unallocated addresses.  For each subnet, show the number of addresses you allocated, its prefix in CIDR format, its subnet address, and its direct broadcast address.  It is mandatory to show all your calculations for your answers.

Question 3 – General systems knowledge                                                               (6 marks)

Several different issues related to our study of network routing and switching are briefly explored in this group of questions (we ask the questions; you do the exploring!).  Answer the following:

  1. Windows’ networking tools.   Explore TRACERT and PING.   Briefly explain in your own words how they work, what they are used for, and the differences between them.  (2 marks)
  2. Address types in networking.  Briefly discuss in your own words the three types of addresses mentioned in the lectures, including at which layer each is used, and giving an example of each type. (2 marks)
  3. Code of professional conduct.  Consider this scenario:  J. Blow got his Masters of I.T. in 1975, graduating with High Distinction from an Australian University.  Almost immediately he was hired in Helpdesk administration in a major public service department.  He joined the ACS at the same time. Over the years Mr. Blow was promoted to Technical Lead, then Network Assistant, then Network Administrator, then Senior Systems Officer, where he still works today.  In all that time his Masters of I.T. certificate was always displayed prominently at his workstation, and he always felt that this was enough for education and training, and his hands-on work experiences made up any shortfalls in further education.

Question:  Discuss with reasons whether you think J.Blow’s approach is fully compliant with the current ACS Code of Professional Conduct.  Which major tenet of the Conduct is most relevant here and why is it considered important?  What would be your advice to Mr. Blow if you were doing his performance review this year? (2 marks)

Question 4--    TCP Header                                                                                      (4 marks)

Shown below is a TCP segment header during a communication between a client and a server.  Relevant values are shown for some of the fields.Using these values and your knowledge of the fields, answer the questions below.

A close-up of a data

Description automatically generated

  • Is this segment from client to server, or from server to client – give reasons.
  • How many options are used?  How do you know?
  • What is the maximum number of bytes the sender is advising it can accept?   Which type of TCP control is this?
  • The sender of this segment expects to receive the next segment with what sequence number?  Briefly explain.
  • Can you determine how many segments have already been sent by this sender?  Explain your answer.
  • What is the value of the checksum in this segment and what does that value indicate to the TCP protocol?
