The third assessment task is to write a report that could be presented to the Local Government Authority of your topic location. This report must: 1) identify and critique the social epidemiological data that is currently available that could be used to inform public health practice on your topic; 2) outline what additional social epidemiological data would need to be collected as well as how and why it would be needed prior to, during, and after any strategy was implemented; and 3) outline how the social epidemiological data would be used to inform other practitioners, researchers and policy makers. This is an INDIVIDUAL assessment.

The report must identify and critique the social epidemiological data that is currently available that could be used to inform public health practice on your topic. In addition, it must outline any additional social epidemiological data that would be required as well as how and why it would be needed prior to, during, and after any strategy was implemented. The report must also outline how the social epidemiological data would be used to inform other practitioners, researchers and policy makers

Only peer reviewed scholarly material should be used. Journals articles are often more relevant than books due to the long lead time between the writing and publication of books and because journals are often the forum where the latest thinking on a topic appears.

Students are expected to conform to the requirements of academic convention and integrity in all their work. Direct quotations must be clearly and properly indicated. All non-quotation text must be written in the student’s own words. ALL submissions will be checked for originality using Turnitin.

The report should be a maximum of 1500 words, must use in text references where appropriate, and have a reference list using the Harvard style. For specific marking criteria, you can refer to the marking sheet on the Moodle site.

The format for the report should be as follows:

Use the following subheadings (bold). The context of each section should be as described.

INTRODUCTION

ONE paragraph outlining the nature of the problem in the specific location you are addressing. This will depend on the topic you chose. Your introduction MUST state the target population groups that are most at risk in the context of the topic you have chosen.

SOCIAL EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DATA

THREE or FOUR paragraphs. Using what you learned from your literature review, briefly discuss the social epidemiological data. This includes the findings of what social factors are relevant to your topic AND the quality of the data as you assess it. You must provide a critique (assessment of this data) specifically aimed at public health practice. In other words, you must discuss whether the available data is adequate as a basis for developing programs in the location you have chosen. If it is not adequate, you must clearly outline what additional data is needed and why it is needed. That is, you must state what questions about the topic are NOT answered by available data and what you would need to know to answer these questions.

APPLICATIONS TO PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVES

THREE to FOUR Paragraphs. Based on your assessment in the previous section, discuss how the available and additional data could be used to develop new public health policy and practice relating to your topic. You will need to identify possible strategies to address specific target groups and also indicate what the data discussed above suggests about these target groups.
