The report will assess your knowledge of key content areas in operations management. For successful completion of the report, you are required to study the material provided (lecture slides, tutorials, and reading materials), engage in the unit’s activities and the discussion forums). The prescribed textbook is the primary reference, along with the recommended reading material. By

completing this assessment successfully, you will be able to identify key aspects of operations management. This will help in achieving ULO1, and ULO3.

In this assessment, students are required to present an operation mapping based on their choice of sector or industry in Australia. You may choose the industry to investigate the current business requirements of an organisation where you are currently working or previously worked. The mapping should incorporate changes to current business requirements as shown in Part c given below. The maximum number of group members will be four students. The group will select one industry or sector in Australia and will submit the operation mapping individually for different organisations/companies of that sector/industry.

It is important that you investigate the business of your choice that you want to make improvements to business operations. The report will be reasoned, evidence-based to be presented to the business owner, operations manager or CEO of the company.

The following areas should be covered in your report.

  1. Provide a brief description of the organisation background. (300 words)
  2. Explain your decision based on selection of the business. Why it’s important to map overall business operation or functional level mapping for the selected organisation?

The students are required to submit a mapping of business operations for the selected organisation. The operation mapping is also referred to as the operation model of the business. It may consist of a flow chart. The student can select an overall business operation mapping or a functional level mapping for the assessment. The students are suggested to be mindful when selecting the operation mapping as Assessment 2 will be based on the operations mapping that they are selecting and submitting in assessment 1.

  • Explain the current business requirements as much as possible and include a flow chart of the business model of the company.

For example, in the retail sector, Coles is one of the prominent and major organisations in Australia. How are vegetables and groceries purchased? When are they purchased? How are they assuring the stock on shelves? How and where they are stored? Do Coles require to warehouse all the items of the store or the supplier can deliver them directly to the stores? How is the sales process managed? What is the basic finance management system for the organisation? How is finance reported to the Head Office? What is the organisational structure of the company? By completing this assessment successfully, you will be able to identify key aspects of operations management and develop an operations plan based on the outcome of Assessment 1. This will help in achieving ULO2, and ULO4.

Using the outcome of Assessment 1, students will prepare a full operation plan in response to a significant change in business requirements. In this assessment, you need to present an operation plan. The operations plan should include objectives of the business, key areas, activities and overall budget for changes to operations of the organization. You may consider that the organisation will implement the plan for the next 1-10 years. The strategic plan needs to be linked with the proposed operations mapping, activities the organization will deliver, and the resources required to deliver them.

The following areas should be covered in your report.

  • Background information about operations plan including objectives of operations plan.
  • Discuss how the proposed changes to business operations would provide real benefits to organisation needs, how the new operation improvement add value to improvement to business operations, competitive advantage, improve customer traffic, improve work productivity, improve sales/profits and any other benefits you consider important.
  • Explain what effects your decisions have on improving operations mapping, business operations, organisational structure, processes, customers and any relevant information.
  • Provide a detailed discussion on the flowchart and include details such as what activities are required to change and be delivered, decision points, inputs, outputs of process, and this need to be relevant to current business requirements as mentioned above.
  • Consider a need for significant cross-departmental plans created by one part of the organization have implications for other parts. For example, a plan to increase revenue by 15% over the next 2 years, the plan includes a marketing strategy and operations component.
