Provide background information about your research project so that readers can understand the aim of your research (next section).
Give a brief description of the aim of the research. Keep this section brief (often only one sentence is needed) as it should be a logical follow on from the Introduction.
Outline the scope of the project, what will you investigate, what will not be part of your research.
Outline how you will meet the aim of this research or solve the problem formulated above. What will you do, e.g. design equipment/software/experiments, collect data, simulate scenarios, compare simulation to measure data, etc.
Outline what deliverables you expect to achieve to meet the aim of this research or solve the problem formulated in 2.
Make a Gantt chart of the project (this includes Part A and Part B for thesis students) noting all milestones and critical paths, leading to the deliverables mentioned above.
Outline the resources required for the project, including:
If you need any of the special approvals for your thesis or research project as outlined below, include that in this section. If you do not need any special approvals, clearly state that in this section, for example
“This thesis/research project does not:
and the intellectual property belongs to the University.”
Human or Animal Ethics Clearance
If your project involves surveys, questionnaires, focus groups or other experimentation or data collection involving human beings, you must have received ethics clearance from either the Unit Coordinator or the Human Research Ethics Committee from CDU before you commence (ethics clearance cannot be provided afterwards).
Animal Ethics Clearance
If your thesis involves experimentation or observation of animals, you will need animal ethics clearance. If this is the case, outline this in this section and inform the Unit Coordinator via email as well.
If your research requires access to laboratory facilities, you will need to undergo safety training. If so, clearly indicate in this section what equipment/facilities you need to access that requires safety training.
If your thesis or research report involves fieldwork, indicate this in this section. Please note that two fieldwork forms need to be completed and approved before you can commence any fieldwork – refer to Learnline – Assessments – Forms, Templates and Marking Rubrics.
Intellectual property is usually assigned to the University. However, there are circumstances where this is not possible, in particular for defence related projects. The most common arrangement is that the student will be given access to background IP to complete the thesis or research project, but will not publish background IP or IP developed in the thesis or research project without approval from the industry partner. As the industry partner provides the second supervisor, this is normally decided by the second supervisor. The student should then liaise with the second supervisor before submitting or publishing any documents.
If the IP developed for this project is not assigned to the University, you must describe the alternative arrangements in this section.
In some rare circumstances, access to information of the thesis or research project needs to be embargoed for a limited time. This is possible within the University system, however the supervisors, examiners, CDU staff with access to Grade Centre of the Learnline unit (usually the unit coordinator, Research Skills Workshop lecturers and the Associate Dean Learning Futures) will have access to this information. Furthermore, external members of accreditation panels must be given access to the final thesis or research report of all students (all information provided to accreditation panels is bound by confidentiality agreements). The maximum time to embargo a thesis or research report is 24 months.
If your work of this thesis or research report is embargoed, you must specify the arrangements in this section.
Use appendices if you would like to add additional information to your research plan.
