CIS8025 Assignment 2 (Due Date 19/04/2021; Weighting 35%; 3000 words)
Relates to Modules 1 to 6, more particularly Modules 4-6 and three course objectives:
- assess and adapts contemporary and innovative data visualisation approaches to gain insight and value that support effective data-driven decision-making;
- appraise and present complex and big data in visual from that is readily understandable by specialist and non-specialist audiences using data visualisation methods tools and techniques;
- interact and collaborate effectively in teams to design and implement data visualisation project;
Note you must use Tableau Desktop for Task 3 in Assignment 2. Failure to do so may result in Task 3 not being marked and zero marks awarded for Task 3. Note carefully University policy on Academic Misconduct such as plagiarism, collusion and cheating. Your Assignment 2 submission is automatically submitted to and checked in Turnitin for academic integrity when you submit your Assignment 2 via the course study Assignment 2 submission link. If any of these occur they will be found and dealt with by the USQ Academic Integrity Procedures. If proven, Academic Misconduct may result in failure of an individual assessment, the entire course or exclusion from a University program or programs. Assignment 2 consists of three Tasks.
Task 1 Big data technologies and data visualisation (20 Marks, 1000 words)
Task 1.1 Identify and describe two opportunities and two challenges that big data presents for data visualisation (10 marks, 500 words).
Task 1.2 Explain how Hadoop and MapReduce as big data management technologies might play a key role in addressing opportunities and challenges of big data visualisation (10 marks, 500 words).
Task 2 Big Data Visualisation Key Principles and Approaches (30 Marks, 1500 words) Discuss the key principles and approaches to data visualisation that your team will use in your Big Data Visualisation project. Ensure your discussion includes one or more of the challenges that organisations face in undertaking a big data visualisation initiative. And you should emphasise the importance of Data Story Telling.
Task 3 Big Data Visualisation Project with Tableau (30 marks, 500 words)
Task 3.1 Provide a data dictionary (Variable, Data Type, Description) for the data set chosen for your Big Data Visualisation Project in a Table 3.1 with Caption: Data Dictionary (File name) and provide a short accompanying explanation of the purpose of each variable in your Big Data Visualisation Project. This will require some desktop research to understand business context of your chosen (file name) data set (250 words 15 marks)
Task 3.2 Describe your planned Tableau dashboard based on your chosen (file name) data set including four preliminary views that will be fully implemented in Assignment 3. Include screenshots of those four preliminary Tableau views, the packaged Tableau workbook file that uses your chosen data set (250 words 15 marks)
Task 4 Big Data Visualisation Project Team Journal (10 Marks 500 words)
Each Team collectively needs to complete a journal listing key activities undertaken by team members, date, time duration and how each activity contributed to completing Assignment 2. Assignment 2 Task 4 Journal can be an appendix or submitted as an additional spreadsheet file using the spreadsheet template file.

Report Quality: Structure, Presentation, Writing, Referencing (10 Marks) Report Structure:

Report presentation use of appropriate font and line spacing (12 pt New Times Roman
1.5 spacing etc), tables and figures with captions where required
Writing style should be clear and concise, audience would be middle to senior management, free from spelling and grammatical errors
Referencing should use Harvard AGPS referencing style with key sources acknowledged with in-text referencing where required in body of report and a complete reference list provided at end of the report. Note: Reference list and Appendices are not included the word count for Assignment 2 report
You must submit two files for Assignment 2:
- Assignment 2 Report for Tasks 1, 2 and 3 in Word document format with extension .docx
- Tableau packaged workbook with extension .twbx that contains required four Preliminary Text Table / Graph views for Task 3.2
You must use the following file naming convention:
