SA – Supplementary Assessment

3.2.9 An interim result of Supplementary Assessment is awarded to a student to undertake further assessment or examination, where the student has:

    1. a) Achieved a minimum of 44.50% (45% when rounded to the nearest integer) of the available marks for the unit overall
    2. b) Submitted all items of assessment, making a reasonable attempt to successfully address the assessment criteria
  1. c) Has the potential to achieve a passing grade as outlined in the Unit Profile, including achieving any required minimum marks by repeating a single assessment or repeating the examination.

3.2.13 A student’s mark in the supplementary assessment/supplementary exam will be added to the original marks achieved in their other assessments for the unit. A revised overall mark will be recalculated using the percentage weightings described in the Unit Profile to enable a decision on whether a student has passed or failed to be based on the same criteria, weightings and requirements as were applied to the original assessments.

3.2.14 The only passing grade available to a student who passes the Supplementary Assessment or Supplementary Examination is Pass (P). This grade will be based on the revised overall mark for the unit, recalculated as described above, and cannot be subsequently converted to a grade higher than Pass (P).

Supplementary Assessment Description

The purpose:  This assessment is aimed to assess your ability to demonstrate advanced knowledge in written communication and your skill to autonomously reflect about good practices in workplace communication.

Assessment Directions:  Using the communication climate questionnaire, you will be able to analyse both defensive and supportive communication behaviours within your current place of work or a past place of work.

  • Identify and describe three types of supportive communication and three types of defensive communication behaviours that you have witnessed within your current place of work or a past place of work.
  • Explain how the defensive communication behaviours could be changed to represent supportive communication behaviours. Here you need to demonstrate your ability to think critically in terms of the problems associated with defensive communication and the solutions provided through the use of supportive communication.
  • The essay must be 2500 words in length.
  • The essay is worth 40 marks in total (please see marking rubric)
  • The essay must include a minimum of 12 academic references using APA style, one of which may by the assigned textbook for this course. Students should note this is the minimum standard for demonstration of research.
  • There is a late deduction of 2 points per day after the due date.
  • The essay must include a cover page that contains your name, student number, resident campus, assessment title, and lecturer.
  • You will need to upload the completed questionnaire as a separate file from your assignment.
  • The essay must conform to the APA style guide.
  • You will need to submit this assignment on the BUSN20017 Moodle site (see Supplementary Essay)
  • The essay is due on Wednesday 21st March at noon and should be submitted via the unit Moodle website for term 3, 2017.
